At Carers Federation, we know that young adult carers often face additional pressures when accessing and progressing through higher education. Balancing studies with caring responsibilities can create financial, emotional and practical challenges that can make university life more difficult.

That’s why we’ve been pleased to work alongside Learning and Work Institute to deliver the Driving Change in Higher Education project. Supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, the project has been supporting 23 universities across the UK to strengthen the support they offer young adult carers and help ensure they have the same opportunity as other students to succeed at university.

Through the project, universities have introduced a range of practical improvements. These include developing new processes to better identify students with caring responsibilities, introducing named carers leads, delivering staff training to improve awareness of the challenges young adult carers face, and expanding access to additional financial support.

This fantastic infographic highlights some of the key actions and progress made through the project so far. It provides a snapshot of how universities are taking meaningful steps to better recognise and support young adult carers throughout their higher education journey.
