Young Carer Awareness and Safeguarding Training for Schools

 Young Carer Training

for primary schools, secondary schools and academies

across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County.

Section 96 of the Children & Families Act 2014 defines a young carer as:

“A person under 18 years old who provides or intends to provide unpaid care for another person who is ill, disabled or misuses substances. The concept of care includes personal, practical or emotional support”

Since April 2016 Carers Federation have delivered Young Carer Training across

61 secondary schools and 91 primary schools

which has resulted in the identification of 250 hidden Young Carers in Nottingham City and 168 hidden Young Carers in Nottinghamshire County

– accurate as of 1st December 2018

Young Carer Awareness Training will support your school to;

identify hidden young carers

identify and understand the role of a young carers champion

have knowledge of the referral pathway for young carers and local support services

develop your young carers school policy

have more confidence to recognise and support young carers

I’m already the SENCO, this  fits with supporting children with additional needs, inclusion and well-being- St Johns CofE Primary

We have now put in additional support for these pupils, including a learning mentor, extra time for homework, referrals for assessment and to AYC, and funding for new uniforms- Fernwood Academy

The termly newsletter is a great way for schools to keep up-to-date with national and local initiatives for young carers. It also reminds us of what is available for parents – South Wolds Academy
