The Action for Young Carers Mentoring Scheme provides valuable support for young carers who are often isolated by their caring role. The scheme provides an opportunity for these young people to build positive relationships where they can discuss their thoughts, feelings and what is happening in their lives.
We are looking for open minded and caring volunteers to be trained as Mentors. Their role will be to offer support and encouragement to a young carer aged between 5 and 18 who cares for a family member at home.
Volunteers do not need any specific qualifications but need a genuine interest and commitment in supporting children and young people with a caring role. Good listening and communication skills are vital. It is essential you are able to show empathy, warmth and understanding of young carers who may be under a huge amount of pressure due to their caring role. Volunteers need to be willing to undertake training and work within The Carers Federation Confidentiality and Equal Opportunities Policies.
We are also looking for Volunteer Activity Workers and Facilitators to help to provide training, support and transport for groups of young carers on activities during the school holidays.
The Carers Federation recognises the important contribution that volunteers can make to an organisation such as ours. We believe that an investment should be made to volunteers to enhance their personal development. To this end we will provide regular and on-going support, supervision and training to both enhance their voluntary work with us, and their opportunities in the wider community.
