Action for Young Carers Plus

AYC Plus is a bespoke service that supports young adult carers aged between 16 - 25 years who look after someone at home. The person they care for may be affected by; a physical disability, a learning disability, mental health issues, drugs or alcohol misuse, or any other long term illness or condition.

The project started in 2007 with funding from the Big Lottery and due to its success and the enthusiasm and dedication of some of the young adult carers, Lincolnshire County Council agreed to fund a project for young adult carers in Lincolnshire. The Carers Federation was successful in that bid and the service is now run on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council.

As part of AYC Plus you may be entitled to one to one support and you can be provided with advice about other services, invited to groups and on activities and you will receive our newsletter. You will also have the opportunity to put your name forward to go on the Steering Committee to make decisions about how AYC Plus supports young adult carers.

When you are 18 you are legally entitled to have a Carers Assessment if you care for someone who is also over 18. This assessment is not to judge you on your caring abilities, but to recognise the work you do and offer support to you as a carer. It would also entitle you to an emergency plan and access to the EELL's (Education, Employment, Learning & Leisure) scheme, along with the possibility of a personal budget. AYC Plus can carry out this assessment for you on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council.

As part of our service, in addition to the one to one work, we spend time raising awareness of issues around young adult carers and getting professionals to recognise and refer them. (link to leaflet and professionals leaflet)
