Action for Young Carers (AYC) Nottingham City has developed significantly in recent years and now plays a crucial role in supporting young carers and their families. AYC adopts a holistic approach that recognises the importance of the whole family and aims to provide both practical and emotional support. Recent funding has enabled us to expand our offering and reduce our waiting times for referrals.
Sport Relief funding enabled AYC to provide opportunities for young carers to enjoy sports activities from football to rock climbing, in turn helping to develop their teamworking skills and boost confidence. New funding for 2010/2011 through the Empowerment Contract will allow us to employ an additional advocacy worker. We've also benefited from a Rotary Club donation, which enabled a group of young people to take part in a musical event in France.
In 2009/2010 we:
• delivered 50 hours of one-to-one sessions for young carer families every month
• supported over 100 young carers
• enabled 22 young carers to enjoy weekly sporting activities
• ran advocacy sessions in schools and other venues
• enabled seven families to have a holiday in a Carers Federation caravan
• provided over 13,000 hours of respite breaks for young carers.
We will continue to focus on listening to the voices of young carers to ensure that their needs remain at the heart of the service as it develops.
